As we mark the 13th year of this wonderful golf tournament that both celebrates the remarkable life of Pat Rupp and benefits the good works of Catholic Social Services, I would like to take this opportunity to make sure you understand how the two are connected.
Pat was a man who loved life and the many adventures it afforded him. He had a successful hockey career that started in Flin Flon Manitoba, took him to the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics and the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, and ultimately brought him to Dayton, Ohio. He was also a U.S. Marine - Semper Fi all the way. He went to Minnesota to start his business career in the financial services industry, but returned to Dayton to settle down with his family – me, our daughter Patti and our son Tom – and continued his career here.
He enjoyed his work so much that he never considered retirement. He was a people person, and always thought of his clients as good friends. He liked the challenge that came with business and financial planning; using his own knowledge and expertise to help others achieve financial security. He was still going to the office until six months before his passing.
Pat believed in the mission of Catholic Social Services, an agency that, like Pat, combines passion, professionalism, and a genuine desire to help people. Pat also believed in giving back to the community that treated him and his family so well. I have no doubt whatsoever that he would be smiling ear-to-ear to see all the wonderful people who are here to participate in the tournament that bears his name and, by doing so, showing their support (and giving their money) to a nonprofit organization that shares Pat’s commitment to doing good work.
